SAP is rapidly advancing its vision for how AI can transform the way people work with enterprise software. One phrase captures this ambition particularly well: “The Beginning of Better.”
As SAP continues to expand its AI capabilities, one innovation stands out as particularly significant: Joule Work.
At the heart of Joule Work is a simple but powerful question:
“What if your AI copilot wasn’t just something you ask questions to, but something deeply embedded in how you work every day?”
That question gets to the heart of what SAP is trying to achieve with Joule Work: moving beyond AI chatbots and creating a completely new way of interacting with enterprise software.
More than a chatbot
Most AI assistants today follow the same pattern. You ask a question, receive an answer, and then return to your application to continue your work.
Joule Work aims to eliminate that gap.
Rather than acting as a separate assistant, Joule Work becomes a central work experience where users can retrieve information, analyse situations and execute tasks without constantly switching between applications.
SAP’s ambition is clear: less navigation, fewer clicks and a more intuitive way of working.
Conversations: one entry point for your business
The first pillar of Joule Work is Conversations.
This is the familiar AI chat experience users already know, but with one important difference: Joule understands business context.
Instead of only searching documents or generating text, it can access information from SAP and non-SAP systems, understand business processes and provide answers grounded in enterprise data.
Whether users need information from ERP, HR, procurement or customer-facing systems, the goal is to interact through a single conversational interface.
Spaces: AI-generated workspaces
The most innovative part of the Joule Work announcement was undoubtedly Spaces.
When work becomes more complex than a simple question, Joule can automatically generate a dedicated workspace tailored to the user’s objective.
In one of SAP’s demonstrations, a user asked for information about a customer return order. Rather than presenting a list of results, Joule created an entire workspace containing:
- Return order details
- Customer insights
- Relevant analyses
- Credit memo information
- Recommended actions
Instead of opening multiple transactions and applications, everything was brought together in one dynamic environment.
These Spaces can also be reused and shared with colleagues, creating new opportunities for collaboration around business processes.
Develop: Bringing AI innovation into your own business
The third pillar is Develop, powered by the new generation of Joule Studio.
Joule Studio allows organizations to build their own AI-powered applications, agents and workflows while leveraging SAP’s governance, security and business context.
What makes this particularly interesting is SAP’s open approach. Developers can continue using familiar tools and frameworks while integrating AI capabilities into existing business processes.
For organizations looking to extend standard SAP functionality, Joule Studio could become a key platform for innovation.
Why this matters
The significance of Joule Work is not the technology itself. It is the shift in how users interact with business software.
For decades, enterprise applications have required users to understand transactions, menus, screens and system logic.
Joule Work reverses that model.
Users describe what they want to achieve, while AI assembles the information, context and actions needed to complete the task.
It’s a real change in user experience, but potentially even more a major change in productivity.
Looking ahead
SAP announced that early adopter programs for Joule Work are already underway, with broader availability planned in phases, starting with selected cloud solutions.
While the broader vision of the Autonomous Enterprise will continue to evolve over the coming years, Joule Work already provides a tangible glimpse of what that future may look like.
At Expertum, we see Joule Work as one of the most impactful recent announcements from SAP. Not because it introduces another AI assistant, but because it fundamentally rethinks how people work with enterprise software.
While this is undoubtedly a technological shift, its impact extends far beyond technology itself. At Expertum, we help our clients turn these advances into tangible business value, without having to worry about the underlying technical complexity.
And that may well be the real beginning of better.
