SAP Focused Run

At Expertum, SAP technology runs through our veins. Our administration and monitoring services support over 450 SAP systems in a 24/7 availability model. When we started our service desk back in 2010, no monitoring solution existed that could match our high standards. So, with the know-how of our technical experts, we developed our own tool, SUSAN, that was tailored to their needs. However, as the world is changing, so did SAP. Enter SAP Focused Run.

Improved business process monitoring

Application management and monitoring is clearly evolving towards cross-system business process monitoring. Customers now require interface and connection monitoring, message flow monitoring, end-to-end user monitoring, and not to forget configuration and security monitoring. To continue serving our customers at the highest level, Expertum has decided to start implementing SAP’s Focused Run.

SAP Focused Run was developed for service providers that need high-volume and application monitoring, alerting and long-term analytics. As such, the tool goes beyond system management with user and integration monitoring, and configuration and security analytics. Focused Run allows Expertum to extend our existing standard monitoring for international support services with services like:

  • Advanced System Management (ASM): this is the core of SAP Focused Run and contains functionalities such as system and database monitoring, forecasting and system anomaly analysis, system health check and SAP Early Watch Alert, License Management and much more.
  • Advanced Application Management (AAM): this includes health monitoring of cloud and on-premises applications, SAP job monitoring for SAP standard jobs and application jobs, IT calendar, work mode, notification, and service availability management.
  • Advanced Configuration Monitoring (ACM): this enables SAP administrators to analyse configuration and security settings across many systems and technologies. It can be used to validate configuration and security settings against predefined configuration templates. ACM can also be used to make sure that configuration settings of the system, database and host are correctly set. ACM focusses on the monitoring of configuration and software changes, including the validation of security policies.
  • Advanced Event and Alert Management (AEM): this is based on Advanced User and System Monitoring and comes with alert dashboards and inboxes. It can also trigger responses to events. SAP delivers a set of predefined alert reaction procedures, but you can also program your own.
  • Advanced Integration Monitoring (AIM): the connected enterprise is here to stay and many business processes span multiple systems and cross companies. This implies the need for a monitoring platform which is capable of monitoring data exchange across system technology stacks. Not only the connectivity between the interfaces needs to be monitored, but also the single interface calls and messages, whether in on-premise and cloud environments.
  • Advanced User Monitoring (AUM): as the days of the centralised SAP R/3 have long gone, SAP’s technology stack enables business processes to span multiple systems. AUM allows SAP administrators to monitor user experiences in such scenarios, offering an end-to-end availability performance overview. Data is provided by SAPGUI, SAPUI5 clients, the SAP Gateway all the way to the SAP ABAP back-end systems.

Application monitoring templates cover blind spots

Expertum now uses SAP’s Focused Run for our on-premise customers and RISE with SAP customers. The RISE with SAP includes software, infrastructure and managed services support. However, customers should be aware that if they are transitioning from a managed cloud solution that offers full basis support, the level of support provided under the SAP agreement is more limited. While SAP takes care of technical operations, high availability and business continuity, many tasks remain the responsibility of the customer or partner. Technically, SAP will only provide support in Client 000, while the other clients are yours to maintain. Additional services such as application operations and monitoring can be obtained at an additional fee.

Expertum‘s application management services team has been supporting many customers for many years and provides services for monitoring, performance, stability and availability. Based on our vast experience with the technical management of SAP systems, we have created additional proprietary Application Monitoring templates for RISE with SAP, for private cloud and for on-premise installations. These templates contain configuration settings, thresholds and KPIs, all of which are based on a combination of SAP best practices, recommendations and our own experience. They will be covering the blind spots which are not included in the RISE with SAP services offering (see Figure 1).

Expertum uses Advanced Configuration Monitoring (ACM) to analyse configuration and security settings across the systems in our care to validate configuration and security settings against our predefined configuration templates. Naturally, our standard templates and recommendations can be extended to specific customer needs. We are particularly good at services such as Advanced Application Monitoring (AAM) in which we can monitor specific customer objects such as IDOCs, number ranges, interfaces, channels, queues and individual messages.
